Be. Write. Now.
A Very Personalized Writing Retreat
When I look at you, I see a woman who writes.
You may leave your writing for months or years at a time but it always calls you back.
You may be in the midst of your opus and feeling dry and doubt-filled. Or confused, looping back to the beginning in ever tighter circles.
You may be dithering between projects, unable to commit to one for long enough to see if it has a beating heart.
You crave time to write more true, more deeply, more: period.
You cherish the central place writing holds in your heart – in the form of a particular project and as a spiritual practice you must engage in to be whole.
You also sense the place where writing meets your spiritual life – that there is a vital intersection between the two that feds and burnishes both.
And, like every human, you need regular sacred pauses to generate new words and reconnect with your writer’s heart, but you don’t always want to do this alone.
“Jen’s retreats offer me a pathway back to myself and my story. The story only I can tell.”
– Lynn Jacobs, Writer and Educator
“Clarity, support, and endless amounts of creative feminine energy, which I still draw on today – that’s what I got on retreat with Jen’s support.”
– Alison Murphy, Whole Life Designer and Writer

Be. Write. Now. Retreat
February 15 – 20, 2017
Five uninterrupted days away from all distractions – from email and social media, from the fridge and your partner/kids/desk, from any old stories of “I can’t” or “I’m lost and that’s a bad thing.”
Five days of total soul nurturing.
Healthy meals cooked for you.
Morning dance then a quiet beach walk.
Writing together using prompts and your personal writing coach (Jen!) to get a lot of words on the page.
Afternoons to explore the charming town of Sauylita, to read, nap, swim and, of course, write some more.
Evenings to read to each other, talk about craft, discuss what your writing life needs to flourish.
In other words: Writer’s Bliss.
This retreat is limited to 14 women.
I’m keeping this retreat small so you can:
- Make real progress on a project through more writing time.
- Listen deeply to where your writing needs and wants to go.
- Get soulfully orchestrated, safe, and truly useful feedback.
- Laugh and sigh with like-hearted women.
- Relax and take the wonderful property my friends Billie and Tim have created.
- Rest. Deeply.
What might be different for you after five days devoted to your writing in a beautiful place, supported by a seasoned writer and powerful practices designed to open your creative flow?
“There’s magic in the environment Jen creates with her retreats: the structure + the freedom to choose how to participate + the connection to the other attendees + physical environment = the creative juices get stirred up and flow.
There is inspiration in unexpected ways – I could not predict how any retreat would actually turn out for myself; although I tried, I was always surprised in the end. Her retreats opened me up so I could really be myself and remember my creative spirit, which was not an easy task. That reminder was all I needed.”
– Lisa Roehre, IT Manager – ERP Application Development
I write this invitation to you in the midst of writing my own book. I feel like I have turned a corner (fingers crossed that I might have a draft done by the end of September) because I am using many of the tools we will delve into at this retreat including support from other writers.
I write this to you as I live the quest to nurture and share my creative spirit. To weave creative joy into the hard work of writing.
Whatever you are working on – a memoir, an online course, a personal growth book, a novel, a screenplay, a series of blog posts, a one-woman show – if that work springs from your soul and is tied to your soul’s growth, this retreat will serve you beautifully.
This retreat will benefit any woman who craves
a container of sacred solitude and self-care,
who loves the intersection between soul and creating,
and who invites the deepening of her craft.
And loves some time in a safe and gorgeous Mexican village staying at the home of two of my dear friends.
Someone who loves playing in the inner world of meditation as a way to support and invite new insights.
Who is willing to show up bravely in community to support other writers’ work.
Who fancies beach walks, wonderful healthy Mexican food, a bit of time for poking around shops or renting a paddle board.
Here’s what the retreat includes:
- A pre-retreat email coaching form to help you prepare
- Private air-conditioned transportation to and from the Puerto Vallarta airport
- Your choice of 2 types of accommodations (see below) a half-block from a white sand beach
- Two delicious healthy meals each day (we will venture into town, a short walk, for lunch each day there are many healthy inexpensive options)
- Writing prompts and meditations to open your creative trust and imagination & structure your writing effectively
- Small group reading circles to optimize helpful insights into your project
- Afternoons to rest, explore, paddle board, shop, read, and then gather to write some more before dinner
- Jen as an on-call writing coach
- Best practices for keeping the writing going at home
Periods of silence to help you dive deeper
- Time to chat in the evening with coach, writer, Imposter Syndrome expert and one of the most nurturing insightful women I know – Tanya Geisler. Tanya will engage us in an after dinner conversation about how to work more skillfully with our feelings about being a writing imposter as an extra treat.
My gift for you is holding the space for both your sense of being and your writing to grow during this retreat – so you come out with new writing, a new understanding about how to grow your writing, and a deeper understanding of the writer – and woman – you are.
And the smaller group helps make it even more possible: 14 women means you get a variety of voices to listen to and give carefully framed “feedforward” to their writing, yet we remain small enough to get to know each other and have enough time to receive encouragement and insights from me.
What makes this retreat special is the magic we will create together, using my 24+ years of leading creative retreats and tapping into the archetype of retreat to get the rest and inspiration you crave.
And the chance to stay in a truly spectacular private compound that has been created with spirit and great design in mind at every step.
“I grew terrifically in my confidence. Sharing my work publicly in a safe space was infinitely empowering. As writers, we all deserve to give ourselves the gift of authentic exposure. That alone was worth the price of admission for me.”
– Laura Toller Gardner, Chief Marketing Officer
I so want this sacred creative pause for you!

“I learned things from Jen that to this day, years later, continue to unfold and bring me gifts and understanding. Specifically, conditions of enoughness and creating containers as a way to welcome freedom, which seemed so counterintuitive at the time and has been an incredibly helpful path to follow.
I learned so much and I never felt excluded or out of my element in any way. Also, I met many wonderful women, one of whom has been a wonderful heart connection and a spirit sister in the most wonderful way since then.”
– Lisa Godo, Mixed-media artist and sculptor

To your writer and your whole self, much love!
How will my writing benefit from your process?
What I’ve seen in the hundreds of writers I’ve worked with on retreat are results like: finding a personal writing voice after years of writing for others or businesses; “the realization that, yes, I really am a writer, and yes, I truly can do this!”; a number of books published by major publishers and self-published to successful sales; online courses started, outlined, or brought to the finish line; “space, structure, and support to actually write”; a bridge built between inner confidence and consistent outer work; permission to write and take it seriously; permission to write and not take it seriously; not feeling alone; taking a writing career to another level.
I’m afraid I’m not a good enough writer or even a writer at all.
This is not about showing up to write polished work. No polished work will be shared. It is about creating a safe place to make new, messy work & use a group of smart people to give you carefully structured and safe “feedforward.” Shitty first drafts are all we will work with. Connecting heart to paper will be the means. Playing with deepening and thickening will be our edge.
How much attention will I receive from you?
I am with you on retreat, taking meals and writing alongside you, and open to all questions. I will also be on call during your writing time for any questions that arise in the moment.
Do I have to pay in full to register?
No, we have links for paid in full and payment plan options above. There is a $500 administrative fee that is NON-REFUNDABLE, so be sure you can attend. We cannot make exceptions due to the small group size. The rest of your payment is due by December 1, 2016. If you’re unable to attend after paying in full, we will do our best to fill your spot and refund all but $500 only up to 6 weeks before that retreat.
Is it safe to visit Mexico?
Sayulita is very safe. It is a mid-size fishing and surfing village about 45 minutes from the Puerto Vallarta airport which is easily accessible from all major U.S, and Canadian airports – book early for the best deal. We will have a schedule for pick-up from the airport available shortly after registration and the airport has a cafe and several pleasant places to wait. It has a large ex-pat population, a variety of upscale and tourist shops, and great restaurants. The property where we will be staying in the private home of dear friends and includes purified water throughout, a glorious garden, and is a large truly breathtaking walled compound. There are air conditioning units in each room although you probably won’t need them in February – weather can be cloudy and cool. There is also a small beautiful pool and numerous balconies and spots to write. We will go out each morning for a walk on the beach and later to lunch, and then you will have an opportunity to shop or rent a paddle board – or take a surf lesson at one of the most popular places to learn to surf in the world.
